Margaret Groening (1919-2013)
A few weeks ago Margaret Groening, the 94 year old mother of Simpson’s creator Matt Groening and inspiration for the character Marge Simpson, passed away in her sleep. Her obituary is filled with character names from the Simpson universe. Her maiden name was Wiggum. She had a husband named Homer. Of her children, 2 were named Lisa & Maggie. Only Bart –an anagram for “Brat” –wasn’t named after one of the Groenings.

After 25 years, Simpsons creator Matt Groening finally reveals that the town of Springfield in the Simpsons is named after the real town of Springfield Oregon.
The only reason is that when I was a kid, the TV show “Father Knows Best” took place in the town of Springfield, and I was thrilled because I imagined that it was the town next to Portland, my hometown. When I grew up, I realized it was just a fictitious name. I also figured out that Springfield was one of the most common names for a city in the U.S. In anticipation of the success of the show, I thought, “This will be cool; everyone will think it’s their Springfield.” And they do.
